Defining Features of the Statue:  The piece is made from multiple castings.  The copper side is created in wax then cast first with small canals going through the inner piece to reach the small pockets of copper within the silver territory.  View this stage of the wax mold.   A wax mold is made of the missing silver side on the completed copper side.  The piece is then covered with an earthen molded again and fired. The silver is poured into the cast. The reason the copper is done first is because coppers' melting point is 1800 degrees while the melting point of the German silver is 1100degrees. The integrity of the first casting, the copper side, can be maintained while the silver side is being cast. Great care must be given to the temperature so that the copper does not melt and combine with the white brass during the second firing.  This technique was pioneered by the bronze creative.  Others have tried to copy the technique with very little success.

The flower in the left hand is made of bronze.  The yellow portions of the base are also made of brass.  In total this masterpiece statue has three separate types of metal in it.  A true modern masterpiece!

About the Pose of the Sculpture:  Ardhanari is the synthesis of Shiva and Parvati into one androgynous form.  Shiva is the right side or the silver side while Parvati is the left side.  Shiva is often referred to as being the ideal husband.  He always wears on male and one female earring.  In this form he even shares his body with his lover!

Care:  The piece should be kept indoors.  Dust the piece regularly. The silver will dull with time.  To make it really shine up you should use a half a lemon once a year to go over the piece.  The acid from the lemon removes any tarnish in the silver or copper.
