Defining Features of the Statue:  Shiva is rarely seen in sculpture holding a bow.  In this sculpture Shiva holds an axe, a deer, trident and bow.  The trident and bow are separate from the piece and can be removed.  The bow has a snake head.  Snakes are used to symbolize the Hindu dogma of reincarnation. Their natural process of molting or shedding their skin is symbolic of the human souls transmigration of bodies from one life to another.  The trident represents the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu.  It is also said to represent the threefold qualities of nature: creation, preservation and destruction, although preservation is usually attributed to Vishnu.  The deer is s symbol of how all the earths' creates revere Shiva as their lord.  The axe is symbolic weapon meant for the destruction of lost souls.

About the Bow of Shiva and the avatar of Lord Vishnu, Rama:  Sage Vishwamitra takes the two princes, Rama and Lakshmana, to the Swayamvara ceremony for Sita. The challenge is to string the bow of Shiva, and shoot an arrow with it. This task is considered impossible for any ordinary king or living being, as this is the personal weapon of Shiva, more powerful, holy and of divine creation than conceivable. While attempting to string the bow, Rama breaks it into two. This feat of unbelievable strength, to have broken the bow of Shiva, spreads his fame across the worlds and seals his marriage to Sita.

Care:  The piece can be used both indoors and outdoors.  Dust the piece regularly.  If you would like the piece to shine use a cotton cloth with some coconut oil or other natural oil to wipe down the statue.
