Defining Features of the Statue:
Ganesh is magnificent and impressive! His large body is made even
bigger with his 5 heads and 10 arms. Pancha Mukha Ganapati (5 Headed
Ganesh) is seated on top of a large lion with exposed teeth and curled tail.
The lion has an ample mane of hair around his neck. Four of Ganesh's heads
face in each direction with a smaller head on top of the four heads. The
Ganesh head on top is smaller and has a cork screw shaped trunk. In
Ganesh's 10 hands He holds, going clockwise from his bottom right hand in the
abhaya mudra, a nut, His broken tusk, prayer malas, a hammer, a noose, club,
elephant goad and a mango. There is a small bell tied around four of His
trunks. Two cobras form his large belt. His two feet are up towards his
body in a relaxed seated position of a baby. The lion and Ganesh are
separate pieces. Ganesh slides onto the back of the lion to secure the two
pieces together.
About Pancha Ganapati Celebration:
Pancha
Ganapati
is a five-day festival celebrated from December 21 through 25. The winter
solstice has always been a festive time of year in all countries, religions and
among Hindus especially, for it is a traditional season for the worship of Lord
Ganesha, the elephant-headed Lord of Culture and the Arts. The five days
of Pancha
Ganapati
offer a Hindu expression of this natural season of worship, gift-giving and
celebration. During each of the five days of
Pancha
Ganapati,
a special sadhana, spiritual discipline, is focused upon by the entire family. A
shrine is created in the main living room of the home and decorated in the
spirit of this festive occasion. At the center is placed a large wooden or
bronze five-faced murti of Lord
Pancha
Ganapati.
