"His four arms stand for His immense power in helping humanity. The noose and goad borne in two of His hands stand for His all-pervasiveness and grace. The broken tusk held in the right hand shows that He is the refuge for all. His huge belly is indicative of His tolerance and also signifies that all things, the entire Universe, are contained in Him. His feet stand for the bestowal of siddhi and buddhi, attainment of desires and knowledge. The modaka (sweet goody) in His hand is symbolic of jnana, conferring bliss. His mount, the shrew, represents the worldly desires which are to be overcome."
M. Arunachalam, Festivals of Tamil Nadu
Defining Features of the large Ganesh Statue: Ganesh is larger than life! His massive frame expresses the abundance of love Ganesh has for the world. Ganesh has energy emanating from him in His radiant dancing posture and because of the actual large size of the statue. It is impossible to be in the same room without ones eyes immediately settling on Ganesh. The large size of the statue has also allowed the artists to work on all the details of his weapons and ornaments. The tollvalasi, ornaments worn on Ganesh's upper arms, are beautiful! The carvings are magnificent and fully detailed. The same diamond shape design is carved onto the ornament on his large belly. He wears a double cobra belt. Each cobra's hood is fully exposed and ready to strike. The hands and toes are chubby and lifelike. They look as if they will just come alive with Ganesh dancing. The rat can be moved around the the statue or separate from the statue. The base has two holes in it for poles to be put through them. During festival days poles are inserted and Ganesh is picked up and carried through the town for all to experience darsana or "sight" of the God.
There is a small rat that is separate from the piece.
It is meant to be placed on the base just under the right foot of Ganesh.
The rat is 5" tall.
Care: Ganesh can be used both indoors and outdoors. Dust the piece regularly. If you would like the piece to shine use a cotton cloth with some coconut oil or other natural oil to wipe down the statue.
