"O'
Angry and brave Maha-Vishnu, your heat and fire permeate everywhere. O Lord
Narasimha, you are everywhere. You are the death of death and I surrender to
You."
Defining Features of the Statue: Narasimha
is the half man half lion avatar of Lord Vishnu who killed the demon
Hiranyakashipu . After killing Hiranyakashipu none of the present demigods were
able to calm Narasimha's fury, not even Shiva. All the gods and goddesses
called his consort, the goddess Lakshmi, but even she was also unable to calm
Narasimha’s rage. At the request of Brahma, Prahlada, a devotee of Lord Vishnu,
was presented to Narasimha, and finally, he was calmed by the prayers of his
devotee. Once Narasimha was calm he assumed a yogic pose, which is represented
in the above statue.
The bronze yoga Narasimha statue is a replica of a stone Yoga Narasimha statue
in Hampi, India.
Narasimha is seated in a cross leg position with his two of his four arms
resting on his knees. There is a belt with designs encircling his back and
knees holding him in the cross leg position. He wears a beautiful array of
rings, armlets, anklets and necklaces including a Brahmin's thread that goes
across his chest and back. In his other two hands he holds a discus and conch
showing him to be the 4th avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Along the sides of the base are two, vertical poles. The poles are used by the
faithful in India to strap two bamboo poles to the bronze Narasimha sculpture
and carry him around in procession before the god is placed into the inner
sanctum of the temple. Hindus believe that the actual god lies within all
statues of the god. Only by physically seeing the god is a Hindu able to
experience the god. Therefore the gods are often carried around the temple for
all people to see and experience in the presence of the god.
